oward County Executive Ken Ulman is pleased to announce that beginning Friday, February 11, the Gary J. Arthur Community Center at Glenwood will offer free public Wi-Fi to patrons and guests. The wireless effort hopes to draw more individuals, groups, as well as other County departments, to utilize the facility for programs and activities.

Wi-Fi “hotspots,” or locations where the Internet can be commonly accessed remotely, are typically found in places like coffee shops, restaurants and book stores. Local, state and federal governments are seeing an increase in public demand to access wireless broadband and are working to improve connectivity in their communities.

“Howard County residents are some of the most ‘wired’ and connected people in the state,” said County Executive Ken Ulman. “Our residents are also busy parents who will enjoy the convenience of Wi-Fi when work deadlines fall during sports tournaments and e-mails need to be sent instantly. Public venues like the Gary J. Arthur Center allow residents to accomplish more at any given time.”

Last year 700 public groups utilized the facility for programs ranging from business seminars and weddings to sporting events and scouting activities. On average, 10,000 program participants, center & fitness members, and guests visit the center each month.

Wi-Fi capabilities have also been incorporated into the construction design of both the new North Laurel Community Center and Robinson Nature Center.
