Violent crime is a major problem in most urban areas or places with super high rates of unemployment for people in the age ranges of 16 to 30. Some reports state that high rates of young unemployment relates to a life of crime and changes in street culture.
This change in street culture has caused local governments to want laws to provided mandatory terms on various crimes. One of those types of crimes is illegal possession of a firearm. This law is very popular in New York City.
Although this law will get a percentage of people off the streets, the law could end up being another Rockefeller law . If you remember , crack cocaine put people behind bars for years but , if you got caught with pure cocaine, you received little or no time. Many thought the Rockefeller law targeted low level income people. If you are going to lock people up for drug possession, you should make the law attack all ends of the income spectrum and not just the poor caught up in other social and economical struggles.
The mayor of Baltimore along with her police lobby wants illegal possession of a firearm law. This law maybe be needed but , at the end of the day, the law may hurt more then it can help. Usually, a law such is this comes in to play due to population , economic and ethnic changes in a local area.
