Mount Vernon RECenter is joining in the national celebration of the tenth annual National Skating Month this January and February. Sponsored by U.S. Figure Skating, the celebration allows skating facilities to increase awareness and participation in on-ice skating programs. This year, the national program is extended through February in order to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1961 U.S. World Figure Skating Team that perished in a plane crash on its way to the World Championships in Prague, Czechoslovakia. What this celebration means for local skaters is remarkable savings on skate passes now through February 14, 2011. Buy a discounted skate book and save 10%. Passes can be purchased at the RECenter or online. For more information about the many classes and programs offered at Mount Vernon RECenter Ice Arena visit them online. In March 2002, U.S. Figure Skating unveiled National Skating Week with great success. Following the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah, thousands of people renewed their interest in learning how to skate. Nationwide, member clubs realized membership increases ranging from 10 to 50%.
